Captian Hook Lost His Island!

Don't ask how, but it seems the infamous Captian Hook has lost his Treasure Island!

Well, it isn't really lost (even though he looks pretty lost without it). Winter maintenance has moved on to the project of rebuiling the old backdrop for the nationally renowned Pirate's Cove. Designed by Bill Tracy, this ride has been through 40 years of laughs and scares as Guests walkthrough this pirate themed walk-through. But the backdrop was showing signs of wear and with the wonderful winter weather Erie has experienced, it seemed a great time to rebuild the tired backdrop.

Don't worry you die-hard Bill Tracy fans! Waldameer took many photos of the backdrop and are going to restore it to its previous glory. The Art Department at Mercyhurst College has elected to gather a group of exceptional art students to repaint the backdrop and have it ready for display for this coming season.

So never fear el Capitan! Your Treasure Island will be found once again. And when it is, cry "Land, ho!"

The Comet Gets Magnetized

After much planing and engineering, the new braking system project for the Comet coaster is starting to unfold. The first Comet car has returned from Velocity Magnetics where it was fabricated with a new undercarriage that will allow it to function with the new magnetic and neumatic braking system being installed for 2012.

With the first car back in the Waldameer shop, work can now begin on the rest of the cars. The materials for the new undercarriage, provided by Velocity, will be installed by our very own Waldameer mechanics.

While the cars get fitted, Velocity is busy working on the neumatic and magnetic braking sections that will be utilized in the Comet's new brake run. The Comet trains will first hit three sections of static magnets that will slow the train down, followed by five sections of neumatic friction brakes to slow the train to a crawl. Once inside the station, two more sections of neumatic friction brakes will hold the car in the unload position as well as the load position. The sections are due to arrive in the next few weeks.

The neat thing about Waldameer's new braking system is the fact that we are using both friction and magnets to slow the trains. Typically, coasters use magnet brakes with pinch brakes having a fin under each car. The Comet is unique in that the friction brake pads under each car must also be magnetic. Velocity Magnetics has designed this new system specifically for Waldameer's Comet to keep much of the Comet's history and origianal feel alive.

Along with this new braking system comes a new control unit, provided by Terry Hoffman. Once the new brake run is installed, Terry can begin his work computerizing all the functions fo the new hardware.

The First Look at L. Ruth Express II

Since the replacement of Waldameer's L. Ruth Express train engine last season, plans have been in the works to purchase a whole new train engine and coaches for the 2012 season. That means less time waiting in line and more time riding the Waldameer classic. Chance Rides has been working hard to get the L. Ruth Express II ready for delivery before the end of the year. But you will never guess where we spotted Waldameer's second C.P. Huntington train engine!

At the annual IAAPA Expo in Orlando, Florida! This yearly convention brings all sorts of vendors, manufacturers and amusement venues to one spot to learn, sell and buy all sorts of new and exciting items for the attractions industry. This year, Chance Rides featured Waldameer's very own L. Ruth Express engine at the show. This bright blue beauty was all ready to chug along Waldameer's tracks. But the new engine won't make it to Erie, PA until the rest of the coaches are ready to ship as well.

So now, we wait patiently until the new train is ready. Keep and eye out, you may just see it driving down the highway on it way to Waldameer soon!

Waldameer Goes Cashless!

It's been a long time since a Waldameer update. So many things have happened in the few short months following Labor Day Weekend. Most of the park has been prepared for another Erie winter by covering up and tearing down signs, rides, tables and benches. But don't think Waldameer packs up and quits for the winter! Plenty of things are happening at the park to make it an even better place to visit in the summer!

The most drastic change that is happening for 2012 is the park is going cashless! That's right, cashless. But what does that really mean? How will our Guests pay for things?

Since 2010, Waldameer has been using its new bar-code system to operate the park. With this system, Waldameer was able to introduce its own type of money called Wally Points. These points can be put on a Wally Card and spent anywhere in the park. You can recharge your Wally Card, put any amount on it and use it for the rest of your life! Wally Cards have worked so well that for the 2012 season, Waldameer will only accept Wally Cards, Credit/Debit cards and Gift Cards to purchase items inside the park. The only place cash will still be accepted will be the Merry-Go-Round Ticket Booths, the Arcade and Wally Card Kiosks.

To make it easier to get a Wally Card, eight new self-serve Wally Card Kiosks are being installed throughout the park. These big, yellow stands allow Guests to purchase, reload and check balances on any Wally Card. With eight new kiosks, it will be eight times easier to get your very own Wally Card!

The Governor Comes to Town

Even though this past Thursday was muggy and wet, the attendees at the annual Erie Club picnic held at Waldameer were still able to enjoy themselves. One person in particular made a surprise appearance to the Erie Club picnic. Governor Tom Corbett was able to take time out of his schedule and stop by Waldameer to meet and greet and eat with the attendees. Of course we had to get a picture of the Governor during his visit to Waldameer. Luckily, Governor Corbett let Steve Gorman grab a quick photo with Wally Bear too! Thanks to the Erie Club and Governor Corbett for coming out to the park and having a great time!

A car fit for the Grand Marshalls!

Everyone knows that Waldmeer loves to celebrate summer holidays with great family fun and spectacular fireworks displays. But this year, Waldameer was honored by the Millrcreek Township to celebrate the Fourth of July a different way. The Waldameer family was asked to be the Grand Marshalls of the July Fourth Parade! Wally and Wendy were so excited!

Wally and Wendy had a great time singing and tossing candy to everyone!

The parade was a blast with Wally and Wendy riding in the back of a truck as well as the Waldameer Showtime Theater Cast all tossing candy and waving to the throngs of smiling faces on either side of 12th Street.

The celebration went on for over an hour the morning of the Fourth and afterwards, all of the Waldameer staff had to get back to the park in order to open for the holiday!

Wally, Wendy and Waldameer would like to thank Millcreek Township in letting us celebrate the United States Birthday with them!

Rain, Rain Delays the Boom, Boom

What great weather Erie has had for the past few days. The sun has been shining, the temperature has been warm and the rain only comes at night! Perfect weather for a trip to Waldameer. Unfortunately, a swift storm Sunday night put a damper on the fun late in the evening. It rained and rained and by the time it was over, it was too wet to celebrate with our free fireworks display by Zambelli.

But that doesn't mean the holiday weekend was a bust! With the sun shining again today and no threat of rain, Waldameer plans to celebrate Memorial Day by shooting off their fireworks from the night before!

So put on your swim trunks, grab your friends and family and get ready to celebrate Memorial Day where family fun is number one!

Shack Zombie Gets a Face Lift

With Waldameer's opening weekends running smoothly, one of the park's most treasured rides had a few "glowing" touch ups to show off this weekend. The 41 year old Whacky Shack was painted with Wildfire paints to make some of its scenes pop under the black lights. Randy Skalos, a DAFE member and dark ride enthusiast, used his artistic talents and gave one of the Shack's zombies a face lift! The ghoul now looks even more scary!

There are plenty more improvements in the Whacky Shack that are definitely worth seeing. But you'll just have to take a ride to see them!

They Rode It First!

Our WQLN "Ride it First" Event is underway and even the sun decided to show yesterday! Eager guests and riders came out to support our local public radio and TV station by paying a few dollars to be the first to ride the three new rides in the North End. All the proceeds are being donated to WQLN in support of their broadcasting.

With the sun shining, the North End showcases its wonderful colors.

Today, even with the chance of rain, riders are braving the weather and riding Waldameer's new rides. WQLN's even runs the rest of the day today until 6:00pm. The next chance the public will get the opportunity to ride will be on Waldameer's opening day of the season starting May 7th.

Flyer Awakes from Hibernation

As everyone enjoyed the warm sun, the Ravine Flyer II coaster awakened from its winter long hibernation to take a few laps around the track. After warming up the grease, oiling the track and filling the seats with bags of feed corn, the blue train was ready to roll. It was slow going at first but after a couple runs, the Ravine Flyer II was screaming over Peninsula Drive and past the new North End where the last batch of concrete was being poured and the new black top was still warm. Take a look at the video to see the first laps of the Raving Flyer II in 2011!

First in Flight

It's a bird! It's a plane! It's... the Flying Swings! With fingers crossed, the Flying Swings took its first flight over the bank at the North End. The smooth ride soared the seats over the L. Ruth Express tracks, by the Ravine Flyer II and out toward Lake Erie. Check out the video to see how fun this new ride will be!

In a blur of beatiful colors, the Flying Swings is mezmorizing to watch in action. You can only imagine how exhilerating a ride would be flying over 30 feet in the air and dangling your feet over all the excitement of the North End. You can't miss a ride on the Flying Swings this summer. It'll be great for the whole family!

Wally's Maiden Voyage

As promised, Wally Bear's new ride set sail for it's maiden voyage today making it the second ride to operate at the North End. The Rock'n Tug spun and swirled back and forth with ease, enticing everyone to hop aboard! It won't be too long before the first riders will be seen laughing on the SS Wally for Waldameer's WQLN "Ride is First" Event at the end of this month. Take a look below to see how exciting the ride will be!

So far, two of the three new rides in the North End have shown their moves. Only one remains to be seen flying high on the hill...

Wendy's First Tea Party

After much hard work and determination, Wendy Bear's new tea cup ride spun for the first time down at the North End. It has been a long time since the first time we laid eyes on the new ride, packed away in a container. But a little elbow grease and electricity was all it took to get Wendy's Tea Party spinning. Take a look at the video below to see for yourself!

The cups and pot look great going in circles but without riders, the cups don't spin very much. Once the first riders choose their cups, they will be able to spin their cups as fast or as slow as they want!

But what about the other two new rides? Wally Bear said he will have his ride ready to rock'n roll very, very soon. And their have been rumors that some people have seen the Flying Swings twirling high up on the bluff. We all will have to wait and see what happens tomorrow...

Stuffed

With all the exciting things happening at the North End, it is easy to forget the other great things at Waldameer. But plenty of work is going on outside the North End to get the park ready for this summer including the first delivery of Waldameer's supply of plush. These stuffed animals and characters will line each midway game wall this summer eagerly waiting for a lucky Guest to "win" their hearts!

Rainbow Gardens looks stuffed with all this stuffed stuff!

All the bags and boxes get unloaded from a full semi truck into Rainbow Gardens where they are sorted and selected before being placed in storage.

The midway games aren't the only thing getting ready for summer. Waldameer's rides are starting to be dusted off and put back together for the summer season.

Passing of the Torch

Even with near freezing temperatures, Waldameer was all smiles today as the new C.P. Huntington train engine and wheelchair accessible coach arrived this morning.

The engine, painted sleek black and maroon, will replace Waldameer's 1971 C.P. Huntington that has been in operation since the early 1970's.

The new coach, painted bright blue, is equipped with a wheelchair accessible ramp allowing all Guests the opportunity to enjoy a ride on the train.

This season, the train will seem more colorful than usual, having a maroon engine and a blue coach followed by red coaches. Don't worry! It is not a mistake! Waldameer has plans to purchase a brand new blue engine, complete with three blue coaches this fall. This will allow Waldameer to operate two separate trains on weekends for the 2012 season. The more rides, the merrier!

The North End Blooms

Since the official start of the Spring season, the North End has been blooming with activity and color. All three rides are starting to come together and the North End is beginning to feel like a part of Waldameer.

Wendy's Tea Party has sprouted up tea cups in beautiful shades of green, pink and red. All that is left is the center tea pot and the ride will be spinning with fun!

The Flying Swings is also blooming for Spring. The top canvas, crown and ceiling panels were installed this past week along with two sections of the center hub displaying colorful, hand-painted scenes of Italy. Soon, chairs will be growing from the ceiling to carry riders around and around!

The North End will be Rockin', Spinning and Flying its way to summer fun sooner than you think!

It's a Sign

No, I'm not talking about Aquarius or Gemini or even Scorpio. I'm talking about signs for the new rides in the North End! Each new ride finally has a great big sign to tell Guests which ride is which. Like I said before, it must be a sign that the North End is getting close to being completed! Back to the Bronze Age

The North End got a taste of the Bronze Age today as six of the seven bronze statues arrived early this morning. The truck from Randolf Rose statues pulled up to the Skeeball building and out came girls, boys, turtles, puppies and an 8-foot tall white-tail buck!

These statues will all be featured in the North End in typical Waldameer design. There is only one more statue that has yet to come to finish decorating the North End. We will have to wait and see just what it could be!

Big, Bright and Colorful

It was another exciting day in the Waldameer parking lot today. The final two containers arrived on time filled with tons of colorful paneling to fit on the Flying Swings. All the pieces had thousands of lights and were beautifully painted with bright colors. Some of the pieces even had hand-painted murals of Italy on them!

A for Wendy's Tea Cup ride, we just couldn't wait to put some of the pieces together! The circular track and the rotating platforms were put in place today just to see if they would fit. It all came together like a puzzle!

Now all that's needed is a few tea cups and a tea pot and kids will be spinning in no time!

Up, Up and Away

It was a beautiful day to fly today. Fly the Flying Swings that is! The first container arrived this morning in Waldameer's parking lot carrying the first batch of pieces to the third and final ride featured in the new North End.

Blue seats galore! Some even fit two riders so kids can ride with their parents.

Inside the 18-wheeler were plenty of blue seats, frames and of course, the monstrous center of the ride. Everything was unloaded and put to the side while everyone focused on lifting, tilting and setting the center piece at its new home.

How do you remove a 33,000 pound ride part? Very carefully!

But the Flying Swings ride is so huge that there are more pieces coming tomorrow! Two whole containers are arriving tomorrow to deliver the remaining parts and pieces needed to complete the main attraction of the North End. For now, the lonely center stands tall, looking out over the lake and waiting for warmer weather.

Two Down, One to Go

Despite the snowy roads in western Pennsylvania, the second new ride for Waldameer's North End arrived safe and on time this sunny morning. The teacup ride was unloaded and unpacked under the direction of Wendy Bear, whom the ride is named after. At the site for the ride, the final preparations are being made before Wendy's Tea Party can be set in position.

The next big event is scheduled for a week from today where the last and largest of the three new rides will arrive. The iconic Flying Swings will be delivered in three containers and will require a very large crane to unload.

As the days continue to turn and the snow continues to melt, it is only a matter of time before the first riders will be seen laughing and enjoying the brand new North End!

Tea Time is Set

As the snow slowly melts, a time and day are set for the arrival of the second ride in Waldameer's new North End, Wendy's Tea Party.

Wendy's Tea Party will have a spot to be placed once it arrives!

With the tea cups traveling down the highway, planning is already under way for the arrival of the third and final ride, the Flying Swings. With two months left before the North End's debut, there is little time to waste!

Getting Ready for a Tea Party

There wasn't much time to celebrate after the SS Wally arrived on scene at the North End yesterday. So much still has to happen for the North End to be ready for Guests come April 30th. The next thing on our list: Wendy's Tea Party.
Ever since we decided to have Wendy be in charge of the new Tea Cup ride, it seems that she has been taking her time getting things prepared. I mean, Wally Bear already has his ride in position! But don't think that Wendy has been snoozing all winter! She has been carefully planning the construction of her ride since day one. Some say she is even more organized that Wally ever was!

Wendy's Tea Party Ride is set to arrive the first week in March and everything is right on schedule. The first pour of concrete finished today and the final pour is scheduled for next week. Crews are working overtime to make sure Wendy's deadlines are met. When talking to one of our workers, they described Wendy as "a very nice bear to work for... as long as you do what she says!"

Waiting for concrete to set is like watching paint dry!

With Wendy in charge of the show, there is no doubt that by the time her ride arrives, we will be ready to set it up.

First Ride Arrives at the North End

The good ship SS Wally sailed into port today and docked in the North End. It has been a long journey for the small tug boat, sailing all the way from Italy. Rog's Rigging met the SS Wally in the parking lot to offload it from the container. Then it was high flying and tight driving all the way down to the North End where the ride was laid perfectly in position.

It was a tight squeeze to fit a whole ride in a container!

And we have lift off!

The production was caught on film by Action News 24, WICU and WSEE television stations along with a personal interview with Mr. Nelson. Stay tuned tonight for the evening broadcasts to catch a glimpse! The Erie Times News was also out to snap several photos for tomorrows printing of the paper.

It's a bird, it's a plane, it's the SS Wally!

Now that one ride is here, we are still waiting on two more, Wendy's Tea Party and the Flying Swings. Wendy Bear has been tracking the progress of her ride and thinks it should arrive sometime in the first week of March. Meanwhile, crews are working hard to try and get the spot ready for the Tea Cups to sit. With a few more days filled with sun and warm weather, we should be ready just in time for the ride to arrive.

Set In Stone

There is no turning back now! The SS Wally will soon be permanent after pouring the final slabs of concrete Thursday and Friday. It seems only yesterday when the grass was still green in the train circle.

With the final cubic feet of concrete poured for the SS Wally, the next step is to hurry up and wait! The SS Wally is due to arrive in Erie, PA in early February in containers delivered from Italy. Unfortunately, there is not much to do until the snow starts to melt. Once the weather turns though, Wally Bear promises to have his ride put together in no time!

Wendy Bear on the other hand is taking her time putting together her ride. She says there is not much to it. She did decide on a color for her fence though, and almost all of the sections are already painted!

All Fenced In

Old Man Winter is still up to his old tricks, dumping piles of snow on Waldameer and the North End. But don't think for a second that a little snow is going to keep us from working! The North End says to Old Man Winter, "Bring it on!" as more and more progress is made at the new expansion site.

The latest news from the North End involves something blue and pink and it's not a baby shower. It's the Flying Swings and the SS Wally getting their fence! After the New Year Celebration, crews have been busy fencing the two new rides in order to have everything ready come April when the rides arrive from Italy. Since Wally Bear's favorite color is blue, he choose the fence for the SS Wally to be blue.

It was harder to choose a color for the Flying Swings fence but after looking at pictures of the ride, it was decided that the fence should be light pink.

Both of the fences look good so far. Wendy Bear is still trying to decide what color to paint the fence for her ride, Wendy's Tea Party, but she says she'll be ready when the time comes to decide.

Hopefully the bright colors will ward off Old Man Winter from dropping any more snow on Waldameer!

L. Ruth Express Retires

For almost 50 years the L. Ruth Express has brought joy to the faces of the young and old as they traveled through Waldameer. The L. Ruth has put plenty of miles on her tired frame yet she still finds the pep to take another go round. After the park closed for the 2010 season, we all sat down and chatted about the L. Ruth's career and after much discussion, she decided it was time for her to retire. With no regrets, we bid her farewell.

But that doesn't mean Waldameer won't be offering a relaxing train ride through the park. Oh no, the L. Ruth Express will ride again with a brand new engine in 2011! With a state-of-the-art Chance C. P. Huntington engine leading the way, the L. Ruth Express will continue to provide families and friends with a smooth and relaxing ride through Waldameer's grounds. And that's not all. Even more people will be able to partake in the joys of Waldameer's train rides by riding a brand new, fully functioning wheelchair accessible coach. This coach will be placed right in the front of all the action and be able to safely secure a person in a wheelchair while they ride with their family and friends.

While we are sad to see the original L. Ruth Express retire, she has given us her full blessing and is excited that her legacy of beautiful train rides can continue for years to come.

Thanks for nearly fifty years of going in circles!

For years Waldameer has provided its Guests with Live Entertainment on its Showtime Theater Stage. For the 2011 season, Waldameer will continue this tradition with three brand new Live Song and Dance shows produced by RWS and Associates Entertainment Inc.

In order for these shows to take-off, RWS and Associates is casting for these brand new shows. The casting directors are looking for talented people with the following qualifications:

- Age of 18 or older

- Having a dynamic personality

- Ability to connect with audiences

- Comfortable with various music, vocal and dance styles

Wally Bear Finds Presents and Holiday Elves

As we all know, Wally Bear likes to hibernate when it becomes winter as all bears do. Since the 2010 season has ended, that is exactly what Wally Bear has been doing. Until recently.

All the commotion and construction of Waldameer's new North End must have jolted Wally Bear out of his winter slumber! Realizing everything that he missed since the summer, he couldn't help getting excited for the Holiday Season and Waldameer's new expansion!

"There is no way I can fall back asleep now!"

Wally strolled through the snow covered park to the North End and much to his surprise, he found more than he was expecting.
He was amazed at the progress that Waldameer had made constructing the North End and shook hands with many of the workers. But even more surprising were the extra helping hands that were from the real "North End", the North Pole!

That's right! Elves had appeared straight from the North Pole on a mission directly from the Man in the Red Suit himself to help Waldameer create their 2011 expansion. It was hard to catch a glimpse of the little elves as they sped around the construction site. But one picture was finally captured of the magical creatures and Wally Bear!

As progress continues at the North End, Wally Bear can be found lending a helping hand in construction and joking with our North Pole visitors.

No Escape!

CAUTION: Two rides at Waldameer have just had their exits removed! There is no telling who did this dastardly deed or why they would do such a terrible thing, but one thing is for sure, if anyone plans to ride the Ferris Wheel now, there is no escape. And if you want to ride the Sea Dragon, be careful! There seems to be a rare Heatermonster hiding at the exit to pop out at unsuspecting Guests! Until someone fixes this mess, these rides will be never ending!

This is a very rare, close-up look at the dreaded Heatermonster. Yikes!

NOTE: With the exits removed, it does seem to open up the area more... more room to walk, and more room for... stuff...

Cement Puzzle

As the delicious smells of turkey, mashed potatoes and pumpkin pie fill the air, it still smells like dirt and cement at Waldameer's new North End. But that is a good thing! Trenches are still being dug, cinder blocks are being laid and pipes are disappearing into the ground. The most recent arrival to the North End has been the new cement planters that will be filled with beautiful flowers during the summer.

They don't look like much now but I can assure you, with the touch of a few gorgeous flowers, they will blossom!

Another arrival has most of Waldameer scratching their heads. No one can tell what it might be. It looks like a cement puzzle to most of us. I guess we will just have to attempt to put it together to see what it could be.

It is beautiful, what ever it is!

So enjoy your holiday traditions and fill up on good food and good company. But be sure to check back after football and pie to see what else has been going on at Waldameer.

More Photographic Evidence Uncovered!

In an astonishing find, more photographic evidence was uncovered that confirms the suspicions of Waldameer's 2011 expansion titled the North End.

At first there were skeptics, doubting the previous construction photos calling them "grainy" or "a clever use of photo shop". It seemed there would never be a clear answer whether the rumors of this wonderful expansion were true. Until now.

The following pictures of the brand new rides as well as more construction photos help put any doubts to rest.

As you can see, these new rides are as colorful as anyone could imagine, creating awesome displays of light, color and motion that seem to tickle your eyes. And, since all pictures can say at least 1000 words, these pictures seem to say words like "fun", "graceful", "laughter" and "excitement". So stay excited and keep checking back often. Word is there is more to come. As for now, case closed?

2011 Expansion Revealed!

For all who have been wondering, waiting to hear what Waldameer could possibly add to make it an even better park, scratch your head no longer! Today, Waldameer announced its 2011 plans for the expansion of a whole new section for the park titled the "North End". This brand new section will be located between the Sea Dragon and the Ferris Wheel where the L. Ruth Express makes its turn by the Ravine Flyer II. Beautiful gardens and an eight foot fountain will greet Guests as they enter under a 20' decorative metal archway displaying three new rides.

The largest of the rides is the Flying Swings. This 41', beautifully eye-catching ride combines light and color with a dual oscillating wave effect that will entice the entire family to ride. Riders will gracefully fly over the L. Ruth Express and enjoy views of Lake Erie, the Peninsula and the Ravine Flyer II.

The second ride will be Wendy's Tea Party, a spinning tea cup ride that will allow children to ride with their parents as they spin round and round. Each tea cup will have a manual steering wheel that will allow riders to control the direction and speed of their spin throughout the ride.

The third ride that Waldameer will introduce will be a rockin' tug ride called the SS Wally. This colorful boat will gently swing back and fourth as it whirls around creating a fascinating sensation that kids and adults will enjoy together. Rounding off the experience of the new North End will be plenty of gorgeous potted flowers, decorative bronze statues and welcoming benches with a variety of jazz music selections playing in the background provided by WQLN radio.

No Tracks for This Train

Who says trains always leave tracks? Well, this must be proof that the L. Ruth Express does not! Many off season projects have been started at Waldameer in order to prepare for another Erie winter as well as improve the park for next season. The remaining portion of railroad has been removed, dug up and is going to be reinstalled with white gravel under it. This levels the tracks and makes them more secure for a much smoother ride. And that's not all. There is a rumor going around that the L. Ruth Express will have plenty of new views for the 2011 season...

Mid-Summer Scream a Success

This past Saturday, two local coaster enthusiast groups met in the middle at Waldameer to enjoy a shared picnic affair. The Great Ohio Coaster Club and the Western New York Coaster Club shared a wonderful meal in Waldameer's picnic grove and then screamed their hearts out on all of Waldameer's fantastic rides including the Ravine Flyer II. As the last coaster groups to visit Waldameer for this season, it was great to see old friends and faces at many of the member's home park. Thanks for a great season and we can't wait until next year!

Great Britain Strikes Again!

Another great coaster club from across the pond (RCCGB) visited Waldameer on the 30th to introduce many of its members to the World Class twists and turns of the Ravine Flyer II. All of the enthusiasts had no idea where they were going on this fateful day but were elated to find out the surprise! ERT was had before the park opened and many smiles and screams were heard by the riders. Lunch arrived as an all-you-can-eat buffet next to the coaster with speeches, chants and more cheers! Dessert was a behind the scenes tour of the Ravine Flyer II which was enjoyed by all. Of course, before their 6:00pm departure, the club members also enjoyed Waldameer's other fabulous coasters including the Comet, Ravine Flyer III and the Steel Dragon. With minor transportation issues to round out the night, everyone made it safely back to their lodging. Dreams of coaster rides danced in everyone's head!

Waldameer had a wonderful time catering to the Roller Coaster Club of Great Britain and wants to thank all who have enjoyed our family-owned park!

ACE Coaster Con XXXIII Flies By

Coaster Con XXXIII descended upon Waldameer in late June as over 400 coaster enthusiasts from all over the United States joined in a three park extravaganza. Filled with great food, loads of laughs and coasters, ACE enjoyed plenty of great ERT on all of Waldameer's coasters as well as some other great rides. It was an honor and Waldameer's pleasure to host part of this yearly convention and to end the party with one of the best wood coasters in the world, the Ravine Flyer II. After a delicious catered meal and plenty of festivities, Coaster Con XXXIII ended with night time ERT under a full moon. Smiles were had on everyone's faces into the night. Waldameer would love to thank all who came to visit us from the ACE group as well as everyone who made the event as special as it was.

Internationals Enjoy Flight on the Ravine Flyer II

On Tuesday June 15, Waldameer opened its park to the European Coaster Club. A bunch of coaster buffs from across the pond enjoyed a wonderful day full of good eats, fun celebration and best of all, great riding time on the Ravine Flyer II. The park and the coaster earned great reviews from even the most seasoned coaster fanatics. Air time, stomach wrenching drops and 90 degree turns were all these wonderful people needed in order to put smiles on their faces. Waldameer and its staff was extremely grateful that the ECC was able to put Waldameer and the Ravine Flyer II on their list of stops for their US tour. As always, we hope they return to fly again!

A Scary Birthday Celebration!

It was the Whacky Shack's 40th on Monday the 24th! To celebrate, DAFE, Darkride And Funhouse Enthusiasts, came out from all over the country on Saturday in commemoration of Bill Tracy's incredible design as well as Perry Duncan, the man who built and maintains the ride to this day. They kicked off their day with Extra Riding Time, ERT, and walkthrough tours of both Tracy Rides, the Pirate's Cove as well as the Whacky Shack. They enjoyed a "whacky" cake and presented Mr. Duncan as well as Waldameer with wonderful plaques to show their appreciation for everyone who keeps the Whacky Shack operating. Although the day was overcast and rainy, (very fitting weather for a darkride's 40th birthday) all who came to enjoy the festivities kept smiles on their faces the entire day. To top it all off, DAFE enjoyed ERT on the Ravine Flyer II! The enthusiasm for the ride was amazing and it seems it will not die down anytime soon. As long as the Whacky Shack reminds riders to "keep their arms and legs inside the ride" and threatens to take misbehaver's wristbands "with their arm still attached", DAFE and all other riders will continue to enjoy the mystery of Waldameer's Whacky Shack.

Countdown to New and Exciting Things for 2010

As the temperature creeps higher up the thermometer, the countdown until Waldameer's 2010 season has finally reached the two week mark. Just hold out for fourteen more days and you and your family can enjoy all the rides, slides, games and treats you can handle!
But that isn't all you should be waiting for. Three more new things are coming for the 2010 season that you should be excited for as well. They include:

1. A New Opening Time! - Once our season kicks off our regular hours of 1:00PM to 10:00PM, we thought you would enjoy a whole extra hour to enjoy some of our rides and attractions! Starting June 19th, half of Waldameer's rides will open at 12:00 NOON. That's 60 whole minutes more!

2. A New Night Rider Time! - Remember when you came to Waldameer at 6:00PM and thought, "Why doesn't Waldameer's Night Rider Discounted Ride Pass start now?" Well, now it does! We've rolled back the Night Rider time from 7:00PM to 6:00PM so you and you family can enjoy a whole extra hour of Waldameer fun!

3. Be a Kid Again! Senior Passes Now Available! - Now those of you 65 and older can feel just like a kid again! For only $16.95 you can ride and slide all day with our Discounted Senior Combo Pass. Now all you have to focus on is keeping up with the grand kids!

Planning for the Thrillingly Delicious Future

Planning ahead at Waldameer takes vision and a whole lot of smarts. Seeing into the future is a learned talent, not a gift. While we wish rides came in little packets full of seeds, we have to seriously think through countless issues before deciding on expansion. Once the future vision id thought through, it is hard not to see it in the mind's eye. While most of Waldameer's focus is on this coming season with all its new and exciting additions, we can't help but plan for the future.

While trenching and digging up asphalt for pipes to hold wires in order for the new turnstiles to read wristbands, we found ourselves planning ahead for the future. More pipes found their way into the freshly dug ground that are currently empty.

Strange you may think. But this is all for a reason. That reason being our future plans for the Merry-Go-Round shelter and the area in front of it. Sources may tell you that down the road, the Merry-Go-Round shelter will become a one-of-a-kind Food Court full of many different varieties of food! This past carousel building will house many different meal options and have plenty of seating for you and your family to enjoy.

But the future doesn't stop there... the area in front of the Merry-Go-Round shelter is said to be the home of a brand new thrill ride. Not much can be said about this new thriller but it will surely put your socks in a twist! So get excited, not only for this season but future seasons as well!

As the days grow longer and the lake ice recedes, Waldameer is also brushing off the cold to warm up for the summer season of 2010. Improvements are being made, rides are being put back up and Wally Bear is stretching for his musical shows. Lots of things need to happen for the upcoming season but one thing is for sure, Waldameer needs Team Members once again! Starting April 1st, Waldameer will be accepting applications for summer employment. Come into the park office between 9:00am and 5:00pm Monday through Friday or Saturday 9:00am to 3:00pm. You can fill out an application here in the office or fill one out in advance online by visiting our website. But remember, anyone who fills out an application needs to have a short interview in the office. So if you want to have loads of fun while making friends all summer long, apply to join the 2010 Waldameer Team!

SHOWTIME THEATER AUDITIONS

Waldameer will soon be holding auditions for their three new live shows next season. To audition you must be at least 16 years old by April 2010 and be available to work from May through Labor Day. The cast will perform three live musical shows produced by Encore International:

"American Vibe" - The heartbeat of America lies deep within the hits of Rock n' Roll! Join us for your favorite stacks of wax songs from the 50's, 60's and 70's. It's a Rock n' Roll journey you won't want to miss!

"The Evolution of Dance" - From the twist to the robot we celebrate fun dance crazes from the past to the present. Loosen up your joints and come join the fun!

"Wally and Wendy's Hip Trip" - Join Wally and Wendy on their quest for fun and adventure! There is magic, surprises and audience participation. Come hop aboard the wonderful world of imagination.

The New Year Calls for New Things

Happy New Year Everyone! It's been awhile since a post has been posted but what better time for an update than the start of a new year? Since the park closed, the maintenance staff has been busy packing things away. Rides are dismantled, signs are taken down and snow has begun to fall. With Waldameer put to bed, maintenance is being done on rides in the shop, picnics are being booked for our 2010 season and new things are being planned for summer already.

The most exciting plans involve Waldameer's creative side. For the Imagination Station, a new spin art tee-shirt station will be introduced. Aspiring artists will be able to pick out a plain tee-shirt, spin some color into it and wear it the rest of the day! (Just be sure the paint dries before hugging anyone) Choose between black and white shirts and a variety of different colors to create your fashion statement.

New additions to the airbrush station in the Gift House will be in your face next summer... Literally! Waldameer plans to offer airbrush face painting for anyone craving a colorful tribal design on their face. And for all you glitter fans, you can even add glitter to your airbrush face paint design! The airbrush face painting will be located right next to the airbrush tattoos in the entrance to the Gift Shop.

Golden Ticket Award Cermony in CA

President Steve Gorman and his wife, Nancy, attended the award ceremony to present the award for the Best New Ride for 2009. Last year, the Ravine Flyer II won this prestigious award. This year, the award went to the "Prowler" wooden coaster at Worlds of Fun in Kansas, MO.

Also, some good news. The Ravine Flyer II climbed the Top Wooden Coasters list. Last year, we were 11th so we didn't make it. But now, we're ranked 6th!

Joel Bullock, aka The Coaster Critic, stopped by the park recently to ride the Ravine Flyer II. He's ridden nearly 200 coasters in over 20 parks. His website received the Best Theme Park Blog Coaster Web Award. He was also featured in the New York Times about Pennsylvania's coasters. So basically, he's a pretty big deal.

The Ravine Flyer II is his 5th favorite wooden coaster and 8th favorite coaster overall.

He also interviewed President Steve Gorman while he was here. This is a portion of the interview:

Waldameer's Plans for 2010
Steve Gorman shared an exclusive during our interview. When asked about plans for 2010, he confirmed rumors that the park was looking to add a flat ride. He cautioned that it depended on the park's performance this year; which of course can be affected by the weather. The flat ride they plan on adding will be a chair swing known as Yo-Yo.

Park Patrol!

Paul Ruben, a friend of the park, writes for Park World magazine and is starting a new feature called "Park Patrol." Each feature shows a picture of a park and comments by the park's operator. The point is to see "everyday scenes through the operator's eye."

Our History: 1940-1960

Unfortunately, another tragedy struck in 1941 when a fire destroyed the Hofbrau German restaurant. A dinner for 1,500 was underway at the time, and while everyone was safely evacuated, eleven people were injured and a waitress perished when she went back inside to retrieve her coat.

World War II limited Waldameer’s expansion, yet the park held benefit days for the Army-Navy relief fund. In response to the national mood, several rides were given patriotic names and paint jobs. For example, the train became the Victory Special. By end of the war in 1945, Waldameer’s rides included Airplane Swings, the Fun in the Dark dark ride, Carousel, Dodgem, Loop-O-Plane, Old Mill, Whip, Tumble Bug, Ferris Wheel, Flying Scooter, Miniature Train, and two kiddie rides: the Swings and the Blue Goose. Also in 1945, Alex Moeller, who had been leasing the grounds since the 1920’s, became owner of the park. He added a Streamliner train from the National Amusement Device Company in 1947.

As Waldameer Park entered the 1950’s, the Rainbow Garden’s roof collapsed under the weight of a heavy snowstorm. However, the park continued to expand, and in 1951 added the Comet, the first roller coaster to operate at Waldameer Park since the Ravine Flyer was demolished in 1938. The Comet is a junior-sized wooden roller coaster standing 45 feet tall, with a 1,400-foot long track length. The ride was placed in a grove of trees next to the Carousel, and features a unique circular loading station. The Comet is still in operation today.

In the mid-1950’s Waldameer was forced to close one of its long time attractions – Monkey Island – as the park could no longer replenish its monkey supply since the government reportedly bought up all of them for the space program.

When I was in Imagination Station (located at the entrance to the Merry-go-round) today I was pleasantly surprised at what they had to offer. Gemstone mining, spin art, sand art, face painting - you name it.

This is what surprised me the most - Wally and Wendy Bear shirts that you color yourself. I want to be a kid again.

Our History: 1930-1940

As Waldameer was struggling to survive the Depression in the 1930’s, a chestnut blight killed off many of the majestic trees that gave the park its name. To boost attendance during this tough time, a relatively new phenomena – talking movies – were offered, and with the repeal of prohibition in 1933, the famous Beer Garden was brought back.

The park’s tough times continued in 1937 as the aging Dip the Dips roller coaster was removed and the Dance Hall burnt down. Since funding did not exist to rebuild the Dance Hall, Waldameer built an outdoor dance floor for the 1938 season. However, due to the unpredictable nature of the weather, the new concept met with limited success.

In August of 1938, another tragedy hit the park. The Ravine Flyer got caught between dips, and as a man rose to try to calm his hysterical sister, he lost his balance and fell 30 feet to his death. Alex Moeller’s wife, L. Ruth, was so upset by the tragedy that Mr. Moeller immediately removed the ride, although the station was retained and converted into a picnic pavilion.

As the Thirties ended, the economy improved, and Waldameer once again began expanding. The first priority was to build a new dance hall. Opened in 1940, the new dance hall had a capacity of 3,000. A local contest was held to name the new building and Rainbow Gardens was selected as the winning entry, due to the multi-colored floor tiles in the building.

Wally Bear: Origins - Part IV

As soon as the bear stepped out of the plant, his life became a whirlwind of new experiences and exploration. He made a mental list of things that needed done:

1. Find a suitable name.
2. Find a hat that fit.
3. Travel the world.

The bear liked the name Teddy Bear, but he wanted his name to be unique. Strolling past a movie theater, he was stopped by a poster showing a map of the country. It read “Across the Continent Starring Wallace Reid”. I wish I could be that guy. I want to travel the continent, the bear thought. The name Wallace intrigued him but it seemed too formal. What about Wally? Wally…Bear. Wally Bear. Now Wally only had two things left to do on his list.

The autumn wind was brisk and this urged Wally on to search for a hat to cover his cold head. He found a hatter and tried on lots and lots of hats. It wasn’t a hard decision. The hatter even personalized it for him.

There was only one item left on Wally’s to-do list: Travel the world. And that’s what Wally did. Because he was one of a kind, surprisingly, people treated Wally extra special and gave him opportunities most people can only imagine.

1919: Attends the signing of the Treaty of Versailles, ending World War I.
1927: Witnesses Babe Ruth break the homerun record.
1936: Helps build the Hoover Dam until its completion.
1944: Advertises the newly invented ballpoint pen.
1957: Reads Dr. Seuss’s new book, “The Cat in the Hat.”
1963: Hears Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech.
1977: Attends opening night of “Star Wars.”
1985: Scuba dives to see the sunken Titanic.
1993: Visits Waldameer for the first time.

That day, Wally Bear fell in love – with the park, that is. He adored it: the smiling kids, the delectable treats, the entire happy-go-lucky frame of mind. Wally asked us if he could stay, and we accepted. How could we turn down a smiling, singing, dancing giant teddy bear? It was an easy decision, to say the least.

And 16 years later, Wally still happily resides at Waldameer.

Last week was a great time to be outside. It was sunny, warm, and even reached the 80°s!

Like everything, there was an exception to the week's awesome weather.

Saturday morning and early afternoon was unbelieveable. It started out nice, went to dark and gloomy, then torrential downpour and thunderstorm, and finally to nice again. All in maybe 3 or 4 hours. There was even a river of water in the midway.

Luckily, the past is the past and luckier, next week looks nice. Phew.

Wally Bear: Origins - Part III

The bear twitched. The vat gently shook. Two fuzzy ears poked out, followed by two beady eyes. The bear, like a newborn doe, clumsily stood up on wobbly legs, tipping the vat and spilling its contents, leaving a golden sheen on the dark ground.

The bear lay on the floor, at the foot of the chemical vat, his Pinocchio-like transformation complete.

He attempted to take in everything that surrounded him: the sight of busy workers, the deep sound of machinery, the earthy smell of the fertilizer plant. All these new sensations overwhelmed the bear and filled his small fuzzy head with curiosity.

Since he saw no other bears in the plant, only tall humans, the bear felt and understood that he didn’t belong. Therefore, he stayed hidden from the workers’ eyes while he explored the intricacies of the fertilizer plant, large for humans but massive for him. A desk was an unexplored cave, an air vent was a dark tunnel, and the greenhouse was a tropical jungle.

Finally, at the end of the day, when the workers had left and lights had been turned off, the bear fell asleep in the plant storage attic. His bed was made up of outdated fertilizer, much too strong for household use. In fact, it was so strong that it changed plants into trees, turned shrubs into bushes, and would ultimately turn a teddy-sized bear into a real-sized bear.

The bear was content with his hidden life in the fertilizer plant. He watched the workings of the machinery, how the workers interacted, and listened to the their conversations.

The bear lived in the fertilizer plant for years and eventually picked up words and phrases. These phrases became sentences and these sentences provoked his curiosity. Wanting to find answers, he found an abridged encyclopedia and thus his love of learning began. Up until that time, the bear only knew things dealing with the weather, sports, and fertilizer, since these were the topics most of the workers discussed. However, with the encyclopedia, he was able to escape the bounds and limits of the plant and discovered a world that he had yet to experience.

Night after night, the bear slowly grew. He didn’t notice it at first, but soon he couldn’t hide from the workers anymore and could only leave the attic at night. Finally, when he was as tall as a human, the bear decided to leave the plant.

He had entered the plant as a teddy bear in a man’s briefcase and left as a living, breathing, life-size bear, ready to experience the world.

We do have KARAOKE, which is kind of like a singing contest if you have a good imagination, of course.

We don't have judges either; just an audience ready to hear your beautiful voice (You're welcome for the compliment - any time.)

Karaoke began last weekend and it runs 2:30 - 8:30 on Saturdays and Sundays.

Our History: 1915-1930

Waldameer Park replaced its original Scenic Railway in 1915 with a new version. In 1919, however, with the implementation of Prohibition, Waldameer was forced to close one of its most popular early attractions – the Hofbrau German Beer Garden complete with singing waiters.

As the amusement park industry entered its golden age in the 1920’s, George Sinclair, who owned Meyer’s Lake Park in Canton, Ohio came to Waldameer Park and built the park’s largest roller coaster – the Ravine Flyer. Opened in 1922, the Ravine Flyer made use of the park’s topography to create drops of up to 80 feet, and it traveled over the road that ran in front of the park. Sinclair was a major concessionaire at Waldameer during the 1920’s, building not only the Ravine Flyer, but also the Old Mill.

Alex Moeller, a former German sailor, became general manager of the park during the 1920’s and continued the park’s expansion. In 1924, Moeller added the Whip, swing ride, and train. Other rides featured during this time included a Caterpillar, the Dodgem; Custer Cars, and early version of today’s turnpike rides; and Bluebeard’s Castle, a fun house. Also during the 1920’s, the carousel was relocated to a new building in order to spread out the park. This proved to be unsuccessful and the ride moved back to the original building after a few seasons. The new carousel building was converted into a picnic pavilion that is still in use.

This is the second day that the temperature in ERIE has been in the mid 80's.

I know, it's mind-boggling. All day at work, I heard rumors of it being above subarctic temperature outside.

But I didn't believe it until I stepped outside and thought, "Why am I on the surface of the sun?!"

After my eyes adjusted to the sunlight and warmth on my thawing skin, I realized that I was still at good ol' Waldameer. Phew, what a day.

Wally Bear: Origins - Part II

That night, the factory owner couldn’t sleep. His wife didn’t share his problem. On the other side of the bed, she snored like a freight train. Therefore, her husband had no trouble sneaking out of bed and down the stairs.

Opening his briefcase, the factory owner took out what had been troubling him all night. The teddy bear blankly stared back at him, looking quite unkempt, with torn fur, loose stuffing, and the absence of a nose.

Time to get to work, he thought. Minutes later, he had everything he needed laid across the kitchen counter: scissors, thread, pillow, and his pajama bottoms. He leaned in to begin but thought better of it. He closed the kitchen drapes, imagining how strange this scene would look to his neighbors.

Unfortunately, the man was right. Next door, Mrs. Fields pondered every possible explanation for her neighbor’s behavior: nervous breakdown, midlife crisis, compulsive teddy bear kidnapper. Luckily, what she saw would never leave her lips, for no one would believe her.

When the factory owner was done, he stood back and admired his work. Down from his pillow made up the bear’s stuffing. The man’s pajama bottoms were now pajama shorts; the fabric was used for the bear’s patches. The teddy bear also had a nose. It was a button taken off of the man’s pajama top. The once shoddy bear was now an impressive work.

The next morning, the factory owner went to the fertilizer plant where his son-in-law worked to deliver the teddy bear for his grandson. As he walked by an open vat of unrefined mineral compounds, the wrapped box containing the bear slipped out from under his arm and fell into the vat.

The factory owner realized the bear was missing but there was no trace of its whereabouts. After searching, he finally went home, and, due to his lack of sleep, thought the teddy bear had been a dream.

Meanwhile, the box sunk deeper and deeper into the vat. The chemical compounds soon filled the box and seeped through the bear’s thin fur. Suddenly, the bear’s lifeless body became alive. The factory owner’s creation had entered the vat an ordinary stuffed toy and soon exited an extraordinary stuffed bear.

Our History: 1905-1910

In 1905, Waldameer’s original carousel, which was installed in 1902, was replaced. The new machine featured a menagerie of animals that were carved by several different manufacturers, including Dentzel, Muller, and Stein & Goldstein and it was assembled by T.M. Harton, of Pittsburgh. The carousel was placed in the building that now houses Waldameer’s current merry-go-round.

In 1907, Harton built Waldameer’s first roller coaster, the Dip the Dips, a gentle Figure Eight style ride.

Expansion continued in 1909 with the addition of a 2,000-seat vaudeville theater and the Scenic Railway roller coaster. During the early years, Waldameer was almost entirely self-sufficient. A gas well was dug on property to provide back up electrical power, while water from a spring was stored in a 20,000-gallon reservoir for use in the park.

Throughout the first decade of the century, Waldameer attracted thousands who traveled by streetcar to enjoy Waldameer’s beach, boardwalk and bathhouse. Patrons used an incline railway, called the Toonerville Trolley, to travel from the main portion of the park at the top of the slope down to the beach attractions. In addition to the roller coasters and carousel, other early attractions included House of Hilarity fun house, also built by T.M. Harton, and a circle swing.

Wally Bear: Origins - Part I

Our story begins in 1902 with President Theodore Roosevelt. Publicly, he was known as Teddy. On a hunting expedition, Teddy Roosevelt refused to shoot a captured bear, claiming it was unsportsmanlike.

Two businessmen, on opposite sides of the world, had the same brilliant idea. They would create a new toy called a teddy bear. Production began and teddy bears spread like wildfire.

Children and adults alike loved them. Teddy himself used a teddy bear as his mascot for his 1904 re-election.

In a teddy bear factory in New York, the owner was just getting ready to close up shop. As he was about to turn off the lights, a lone teddy bear caught his eye. The bear was in the "Undesirable" pile in the dusty corner of the factory. The owner had seen the bear before; in fact, the bear had been sitting in that pile ever since production began. The lone teddy bear had a torn nose and various holes in its fur. White stuffing spilled out in a fluffy mess.

The owner hesitated. He leaned against the door frame, lost in thought.

When he got home, the factory owner set down his briefcase and greeted his wife. The couple's cat, Felix, had been waiting all day for him because the man frequently slipped Felix treats when his wife wasn't looking. As Felix rubbed up against the man's leg, his tail knocked over the briefcase, spilling its contents.

"What's this?" the woman asked, holding up a beaten up teddy bear.

"Oh, nothing." Despite the man's reply, this was not the case. The bear was indeed something. He was planning on fixing up the bear for his grandson, born the day before.

As the night went on, the man went through his evening chores: reading the paper, paying bills, reviewing the factory's production numbers. He may have seemed concentrated on work, but his mind was elsewhere. His mind was on the bear.

We received boatloads, and I mean boatloads, of awards for the Ravine Flyer II. They barely fit on the wall.

I Lived To Tell the Tale

WHAT: Top-secret mission

I joined two daredevils and climbed the first (and certainly tallest) hill of the RF II. There's a walkway on the side for maintenance and daily inspection. Yup, everyday someone has to walk the entire track, inspecting its safety. Gulp.

After a few minutes, when we reached the summit, I was out of breath. I don't know whether it was because of the climb or my nerves. Probably a little bit of both. Anyways, the professional coaster climbers and I, the newbie having second thoughts, were up there to put up the flags on top of the hill. We have American, Canadian, and a few colored ones. Phew, the things I do for my country.

Despite my fear of falling to my death, we stayed up there for 15 minutes until the job was done.

MISSION ACCOMPLISHED

The premiere of the MDO was a hit! As I said before, 608 tickets sold Saturday and 778 sold Sunday.

If my math is correct...

we raised OVER $3,000 for the John Kanzius Cancer Research Foundation!

Wow! Thanks to everyone who came out this past weekend!

Remember, the park (no waterpark) opens this weekend: Sat and Sun 12-9 pm.
